Today was to be a longer driving day, at least 6 hours on-the-road to get to our final destination in Terrace Bay. We were on a time-line though as TIm has scoped out a theatre at a destination that is playing Superman (2025), that he, Charlie, and Dad wanted to see. It started at 7:30, so we needed to get moving quickly in the morning to make sure we can keep our busy schedule.

Unfortunately, about an hour down the road, we encountered a complete traffic stop. Google Maps told us was because of an accident. Traffic was absolutely, completely stopped in both directions and for over 90 minutes.

We’re approaching Ignace Ontario! Oh, and there’s a truck in the ditch!

Suffice to say, this inconvenience for us probably doesn’t pale in comparison to the “inconvenience” the drivers in the accident had today! It appears that a pick-up truck drifted crossed the center-line and caused a transport truck to swerve to avoid it. Both ended up in the ditch. There were a few ambulances too, so presumably people were hurt too.

This truck had a bad day 🙁

After clearing the accident we pulled over 30 minutes later for a bio-break and encountered a guy who is cycling across Canada! He was interested to know what we were doing out here in our Mokes and was impressed to hear we had been up to the Arctic Ocean. We were even more impressed in his cross-Canada trek that had him start in Victoria, BC and was now in northern Ontario. He has a YouTube Channel (it’s in Punjabi though!): https://www.youtube.com/@akashssidhu

This guy is cycling coast-to-coast!

Continuing on we pulled over at a gas station just outside of Shabaqua Corners and put together some sandwiches with the food we had in our cooler-bag. We were still trying to keep pace to get to Terrance Bay by 7pm, so we didn’t want to extend our stops for too long, but still wanted to make each stop. We were also loosing an hour on this drive as we were heading back into the Eastern Time Zone!

Back in ‘normal’ time!

Coming to Thunder Bay we wanted to go check out a few things we weren’t able to stop at a few weeks ago. Firstly, we wanted to go by Kakabeka Falls, just west of Thunder Bay.

A great stop to make just outside of Thunder Bay

Kakabeka Falls is considered the second highest water falls in Ontario, and they certainly are impressive. They are also super-simple to visit if you are coming past the area. There is a parking area right near the falls, and the walk to see the falls takes just seconds. Do note: there is a charge to park! CA$6.50 in 2025.

And now for a group selfie!

Next on the hit-list of stops to make was The Persian Man in Thunder Bay, in order to obtain the locally famous “Persians” that they sell. Persians are essentially a donut with pink-strawberry icing. They were definitely tasty when fresh, but we were left wondering why these are so famous here. It’s gotta be a Thunder Bay thing, that we just can’t understand.

Yes! We did get our Persians!

Because Charlie was now with us, and didn’t hit all the sights on the way out with us the first time, we make sure to stop at the Terry Fox Memorial east of Thunder Bay with him.

Back to the Terry Fox memorial. This time with Charlie.

The memorial was our last stop before motoring on to Terrace Bay to hopefully catch the movie at 7:30 pm. Tim did some last-minute checks to figure out the actual address of the theater, only to discover that the theatre he was chasing down was in Terrace, British Columbia, not Terrace Bay, Ontario. Laughter ensued as we realized we were chasing after a non-existent theatre in Terrace Bay!

A bit bummed out we continued on to Terrace Bay to get to the hotel. When we arrived we saw that the hotel was part-and-parcel with a Pizza Hut Express operation, which really made our dinner plans easy to decide on. So we ordered two pies and watch an Office episode on the TV to end the day.

Tomorrow we should be onto our second last day of the trip, as we head south towards-and-through Sault Ste. Marie.

I had my first Persian experience while travelling with Brooke Meekis. I flew her up to TBay and met her chaperone for the next leg of her journey. They are tasty and very filling! On my plane ride home other passengers had boxes of Persians they were bringing home to their families in the GTA!
