We have a day to spend in Dawson City. The Mokes are running well, so we don’t have to worry too much about doing any repairs.

First order of business is breakfast, but we’re solving that with some hot-water and oatmeal. Toss in a handful of trailmix and you have yourself a decent starter-meal. The Starbucks coffee they have in-room at The Downtown hotel is actually pretty good too! It’s a good thing we found out where they stored the big box of it!

We want to travel around to see the city and surrounding area, which is surrounded by mountains. The best, and most famous spot is up on The Dome, which is the closest elevated area near the town. There’s a road way leading to the top and a great overlook at the top. We spent some time up there admiring the view and making calls to friends and family from up there. And a hundred pictures or so!

After coming down the mountain we headed to the Yukon River ferry that takes cars across the river. The Klondike Highway ends on the east side of the river while the Top of the World Highway starts on the west side, and continues across into Alaska. This free ferry service runs most of the day and connects traffic between these two highways.

We’re certainly in the “small vehicles” catagory!

We drove down here about 15 minutes to take in the views, which are spectacular here too. But never found an excellent vantage point to stop. Turning around we headed back into town to figure out our next plan-of-action for the day.

The kids wanted to head out and do some panning for gold. The rest of the Mokin’ crew wanted a bit of a breather so took some down-time in the afternoon. It’s notable that the town is buzzing with people due to the Dawson City Music Festival happening while we’re here.

We divided and conquered the dinner situation again in Dawson City. Jeff and Phil hunted down some burritos at La Tacaria. Fortunately, they arrived just in time as they were sold out of most things, and managed to get the last burritos available. Mom and dad headed to the Drunken Goat and ended up waiting for about 30 minutes for a table. Tim and family went back to the Triple J for food.

In the evening, Jeff decided to head over to the music festival to catch an act (Shad) who he has listened to for years. The set began at midnight, so he caught some early Z’s, so he could feel fresh enough to head over and attend.

Tomorrow we’re heading back to Whitehorse! It’s another long drive. Hopefully Jeff’s late night concert doesn’t leave him too tired to drive!
