With best intentions we want to be on the road at 8am. However, again, we got on the road late this time around 9:30. Optimistically, we were on the road only one and a half hours late rather than the two hours the day previous!

This was day two of three very long driving days for us. Another 700 km to drive and we estimated a nine hour duration. We front-loaded the trip with a number of long drives, but geography also dictated which stops made most sense.
Heading north out of Sault Ste. Marie we were now travelling with Lake Superior to our left. Even though it’s summer time, the winds blowing off the lake made for some wild temperature swings on route. Travelling in an open vehicle you certainly could feel the temperature plunge dramatically at times. Typically this was accompanied with some pretty dramatic fog patches covering the rolling landscape of the Canadian Shield.
We pulled off at Old Women Bay because there was apparently a great look out spot here. Unfortunately the fog completely obscured the view!

Just a few minutes up the road from here was Wawa, Ontario, home of the famous Canada Goose attraction. Indeed, there is a very large Canada Goose erected by the side of the road as you pass through Wawa!

We stopped in Wawa for lunch, grabbing some subs at the local Subway. As is starting to become normal, we had a string of people walk up and want to talk about the vehicles. Phil and Jeff are having to become very familiar with all the many details of the vehicles in order to hold a conversation with all the people who want to talk. We’re thinking about printing up some business cards with QR codes that can send them back to the website here for all the info!
The next leg of this day’s journey was over to Nipigon at the tippy-top-edge of Lake Superior. This particular leg of the journey was just mind-blowingly fantastic. The landscape through here was magical at times, with the winding roads, lakes dotting the landscape, trees where there weren’t lakes, and the rock of the Canadian Shield where there was no lake nor trees. The pictures we did take don’t serve it justice. It’s a pitty this part of Canada takes so long to get to for most of the population!
Half way to Nipigon we stopped in at Terrace Bay for a bio-break. While stopped there we met up with one of the other travellers going west who was pulling a classic Bolar camper. We had been seeing him the last two days on our journeys as we over took each other a few times. He was heading to Edmonton too over the next few days. We chatted for a bit and then passed him again an hour later on the road! Much horn-honking was to be had!

At Nipigon we stopped to take in the views from a public raised observation deck. It over looks the landscape, and the fantastic cable-stayed bridge there.

Heading south-west from Nipigon we were in the home stretch to Thunder Bay, but took the time to stop at the Terry Fox memorial on the east side of city. The visitor center was closed at the time, but the outside portion was worth stopping for too, there is no cost to drive up and park to visit. This is a great memorial to one of the great Canadian heroes. Definitely worth stopping for.

We pulled into our hotel around 8:30 pm. We had some concern about the security of the vehicles at this stop, so we took extra efforts to pull them in close to the building and take the extra steps to fully tarp the vehicles over to dissuade anyone from poking around.
After checking in, we walked up the street to grab some grub at the Prospector Brew Pub. This was another late-in-the-day stop for food, so the menu was limited as the kitchen was closing up. We opted for a bunch of pub-grub sharable and made our own mini-buffet.

Tomorrow, we’re crossing into Central Time Zone and into Manitoba!
