After getting the Mokes tuned up and Green Moke outfitted with 4 new tires we were ready to roll. We now have a large GMC Yukon following us with family inside, enjoying the comforts of a modern vehicle: doors and windows!

Heading north our first stop was at Braeburn Lodge which is famous for it’s massive cinnamon rolls. But as we arrived we parked up along side an even older vehicle ALSO making it’s way to Tuktoyaktuk along the Dempster Highway! A 1929 Ford Model A Woodie Wagon! Impressive!

Classic Vehicle Parking Only

So, these cinnamon rolls are seriously massive. These things feed 4 people! But at CA$20 a pop, you’d hope they’d go the distance. They were good, but we think that maybe we should have asked if they could pop it in the microwave to warm them up a bit. They could easily be approaching a coveted 5-start #moketrip rating if they were warm! There is great debate amongst the Moke Trip crew about whether these were 3 or 4 star cinnamon buns, regardless of the size. The majority says 4 stars though: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I like big (cinnamon) buns, and I can not lie!

Just a short trip up the road we drove through Carmacks and grabbed a few photos. Jeff’s friend Marshal lived here for a few years, and Jeff wanted to send him a few photos.

While still fairly picturesque, this day was all about putting in the miles (kilometers!) in our goal of getting up to the Arctic Circle & Tuktoyaktuk. We did come across a couple of elk though!

Once hitting the final stretch of the drive things got pretty interesting as we drove through Bear Creek which has a really unique set of mining tailings from the dredging they did there. These tailings mar the environment with their really odd long piles of boulder and dirt across the landscape. This is worth reading or watching to know more about. It’s really interesting to see in person.

Dawson City itself is a tourist town. This is evident by the kinds of industries that are here: hotels & restaurants. That’s pretty much it.

Because of the long drive, we rolled into Dawson City and got unpacked, and found that many restaurants were in the process of closing for the day. Many of those that were still open were 19+, including a casino/burlesque house that also housed a well recommended schnitzel shop. We quickly established that this place was not kid-appropriate, no matter how appetizing the schnitzel appeared to be.

We ended up dividing and conquering by having Jeff & Phil seek Jamaican treats for themselves, while Tim, Dad and the family went off to find something else.

The sun wasn’t going to set until after 2am, so we rolled into bed and pulled the shades tight to get a good night’s sleep

Tomorrow we take the next step north to Eagles Plain!
