After surviving the blown out windshield and three hours of wind-swept driving, we rested up in Fort Nelson and started the morning with another hotel breakfast, but this time they had ham slices with the classic scrambled eggs. Since this has been doubling as a food-blog, we’re going to throw a rating down here on the breakfast: 2 out of 5 stars (⭐⭐)

At 8am we delivered the Moke windshield frame to the glass repair place so they could get start on the job. We then took a trip to the local museum to check out the history of the Fort Nelson area, as well as a lot of information on the Alaska Highway build-out in 1942.

Plenty of historic artifacts from the local area made for a really neat visit

We went back to the glass repair shop and they had it all ready to go. We slid the whole frame & glass back into place and secured it on the Blue Moke, and we were ready to roll again. We were feeling pretty good about how we navigated that disaster.

Heading west out of Fort Nelson we had the northern most portion of the Rocky Mountains ahead of us. But before we entered, we decided to make a stop at the well advertised “Cinnamon Bun Centre of the Galactic Cluster” at Tetsa Rive Lodge, located at mile-market 375 on the Alaska Highway.

Apparently they sell over 200 cinnamon buns a day, and now we know why. They were DELICIOUS. Five out of five stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Here to Liard Hot Springs was definitely the most amazing leg of the journey yet, surpassing all the other beautiful sights we had already seen. In this leg of the journey we were now into proper mountains, something Jeff had never seen before. Just a constant visual onslaught of amazing sights to see.

As you know, or as you have been told, there is just no way for a photograph to truly capture the grandeur or majesty of a place like this, but let’s try:

Perhaps the most amazing portion of the drive was the leg down by Muncho Lake. Heading north the road winds along, with Muncho Lake to your left, and the base of the mountains to your right. It’s simply fantastic.

MOVE DAT MINI MOKE!

We also finally encountered our first set of wildlife on this leg of the journey. We saw herds of bison, a rather sickly looking juvenile moose, and a reindeer (caribou) that got a bit spooked and started to run.

We managed to get to the hotel about 6:50 and started to unpack our cars, only to find out that the restaurant was about to close at 7. We rushed inside, but were told the kitchen had already closed. It was protein bars and apples for dinner for us!

But the day wasn’t over yet, for Liard Hot Springs wouldn’t be the Liard Hot Springs without Hot Springs! So, we grabbed our bathing gear and headed across the road to the provincial park of the same name and each paid our $5 entry fee. We then walked down the boardwalk to the hot springs.

What a great way to end an awesome day

They have a really nice setup there. They have built a facility surrounding this really spectacular natural hot spring. Complete with change rooms, cubbies for your things, and a number of different stairs down into the hot water. And hot it was! The water was easily hotter than just about any hot tub we had ever gone into before.

A MUST DO if you are driving through Liard Hot Springs

This day was a whirlwind! We’re not sure the next few are going to quite top it, but we’ll try.

Tomorrow we’re off to Watson Lake!

Phil, what a great idea and the stories and incidents are hilarious!! One thing you did not do in Manitoba or Saskatchewan is eat Ukrainian food. Nothing like a bowl of borscht, a dozen perogies and 2-3 cabbage rolls!!! What a feast!!
Also, maybe on your way back through Winnipeg, you need to try Winnipeg Goldeye. It is a white fish that is smoked and if you can get it fresh out of the smoker, OMG!!!
If you need help locating the above, let me know!!
Keep having fun!! It is a trip of a life time!!!

We’ll be coming back through Winnipeg on the way back. We’re putting that down as a recommendation!
